The Mark 1s were the first standardised coach design by British Railways. Following nationalisation, BR was still producing rolling stock to designs created in the Big Four era. The Mk1 was intended to be an amalgamation of the best features from previous designs, incorporate a much stronger body and be a standard coach suitable for use on all lines. BR produced thousands of examples, with a huge range of body styles and they saw use across most of the UK. The design proved to be very successful and remained in general passenger service until 2001. To this day, many Mk1 examples can be seen in use on mainline charter trains, in departmental usage with Network Rail and of course on a myriad of preserved lines across the UK.
