American Flyer was a leading brand of toy and model trains in the United States during the mid-20th century. Best known for its S gauge trains of the 1950s, American Flyer was originally an independent company before becoming a division of the A. C. Gilbert Company.

Founded by Chicago toymaker William Frederick Hafner, who developed clockwork motors for toy cars in 1901, American Flyer quickly became admired for its quality construction, realistic detail, and innovative designs.
